Blue Bottle Coffee - Mint Plaza, San Francisco

The amazing thing about the food in SF, is that people are conscious of what they eat, being it be local, organic or sustainable--and the Blue Bottle Coffee does all that with delighting food and extraordinary coffee! Craig and I where visiting SF, and my friend Mark had recommended this place to meet up for breakfast. Here not only is your coffee served with a beautifully frothy leaf design, but their breakfast food is scrumptious!

^ Casual counter, line up and customers!
Feel free to seat yourself.

^ Watch your coffee get made.

And here it comes:
^ Two Cafe Lattes and the secret espresso drink
on the menu.

^  The Gibraltar! Oh so secretly good!

Mark had ordered his breakfast:
^ Farm Eggs from Judy's Organic Sonoma Farm:
Poached Catalan Style with Tomato Sauce, Braised Greens
and Shaved Beemster Cheese.

Craig had gotten quite the dish, light and savory:
^ The Frittata:
Smoked Bacon, Crushed Potatoes,
Balsamic Roasted Onions, Ricotta & Rosemary

Since I'm the sweet-tooth, I had gotten:
^ The Belgian Style Wafle:
with Shady Farms Syrup & Whipped Butter

^ Here's Mark! Coffee King.

With coffee and food so decadent, the ingredients truly define the food. I have to say, I am in love with Blue Bottle Coffee, and it will be the first to visit once I go back to SF! Thanks so much Mark! I'm hooked!

Asa Ramen - Torrance, CA

Regular Kotteri with extra chashu, butter, and green onions

Every thursday most of us have classes that run till 10pm, and as always we're STARVING. It has become a tradition to celebrate our survival of another week at Otis by going to our favorite ramen place: Asa Ramen in Torrence. They're conveniently open until 2am, so we can take our time enjoying our delicious meals.

Above is a photo of their standard bowl of ramen: the Kotteri. Don't get me wrong, it's amazing! It's a shoyu base ramen which means its a soy base. Like most ramen houses, Asa has a variety of toppings/additions for your bowl. My favorites are extra chashu, butter and green onion. Gotta have it!

Gyoza appetizer

Typically we end up ordering some appetizers. Asa has some really great gyoza, they fry them when they're still stuck together so it's always fun to pick 'em apart. They're fried to the point where they're soft and gooey yet still hold the fillings inside. These always disappear from the plate within minutes!

Cafe Surfas - Culver City, Los Angeles

Earlier in the week, my friend Tania recommended the Surfas Cafe after reading the first blog post on Afoodcionado. Despite the terrible weather, we decided to forge the rain and traffic for a pretty savory lunch.

At Surfas, part cafe and part gourmet supply store, you get good vibes from the cute interior decoration, casual and surprisingly polite customers, to the wonderful aroma of grilled bread and coffee. Surfas is decently priced, for the quality of ingredients and food, the sandwiches where delicious as well as the savory drinks (which come with my favorite type of ice cubes--small cylinders of crunchiness)!

^ I am in love with their bike display in the main entrance window.

^ Interior
Here inside, warm and sweetly colored, you meet a pretty decent line of people. Not to worry, the line moves fast and the barista/clerks are super helpful. I straight out told my guy that it was my first time here, and he helped me out with my sandwich and drink choice, as well as telling me where to pick up my food and drink.
It's a casual, pay and order at the counter, wait for your drink on the left, and grab your food on the right. As a warning, seats are limited inside, so it's best to have a friend to grab a table while waiting in line if you want to be inside. There are however a lot of tables outside to be enjoyed in warmer weather.

^ Tania's Lemonade (Left) and my Arnold Palmer (Right)

I had gotten something light:
^ Ultimate Grilled Cheese Sandwich:
White Cheddar, Fontina, Blue Cheese Mayo
on a Pecan and Raisin Bread

This absolutely hit the spot for me. Despite the name, the cheeses where not overwhelming. It went well, almost like a cheese platter on the go. The salad was mixed greens in a light vinaigrette sauce, with beautifully edible flowers flourished on top. I had to assure Tania that they could be eaten!

Yvonne had gotten this amazing Panini:
Kurobuta Ham Panini:
Kurobuta Ham, Fontina Cheese, grilled Red Onion,
and Honey Mustard on Whole Grain Bread

As a drink, she had gotten:
^ Italian Soda with an Apple Syrup

And... Tania finally received hers:
^ Jorge's Chicken Sandwich:
Jidon Organic Chicken, Nueske Bacon, Aged White Cheddar, Cilantro Avocado Spread,
Mixed Greens, Red Onion, Tomato slices on a Rustic Hero Roll.

^ Man this thing was a deliciously loaded monster!
It is after all a Cafe Surfas Signature Dish!

^ Yvonne was pretty excited about her panini...
and I think at this rate, a little impatient with me taking all these photos!

It's a great lunch place with an assortment of tasty drinks and sandwiches. They also serve burgers, salads, daily soups and desserts! I'll be back here soon, hopefully with better weather to fully enjoy their outdoor seating. I'd love to do some shopping the next time I'm here and to try out their desserts.

Thanks so much to Tania for the recommendation!

The Harwood Arms - Walham Grove, London

Coming from LA; a city blessed without weather and the access to seasonal foods year round, I have to say eating at The Harwood Arms was an amazingly refreshing, and very tasty experience.

The Harwood Arms enlightens your palette despite the accessibility of ingredients due to actual winter weather, something I had never thought would limit a typical chef or restaurant's menu here in LA. Located in Walham Grove, my boyfriend Craig and I jumped on the tube from Regent's Park where we where staying and took a 5-8 minute walk from the station through West Brompton, a quiet neighborhood to reach Harwood. We where meeting Craig's parents, Colette and Daniel respectable chefs from LA.

The service there was amazingly fast and friendly, considering they only had two lovely servers who not only ran the whole floor, running up the stairs to the kitchen on the second floor, but also busing the tables. Now getting to the food and drink, Harwood Arms is actually a refurbished home turned gastropub with a good selection of wine, ciders and beers. The highlight however, was the local game and wild venison they had on the menu, caught locally in Berkshire.

^ Westons Premium Organic Cider\

To start off I had the cider, which was by far the best cider I had ever had. For 125 years of cider work, it was deliciously fruity and light without being overloaded with a sugary aftertaste many American ciders leave behind.

Berkshire Hare Faggots with carrot puree,
horn of plenty mushrooms and black pepper

I then continued with the Berkshire Harewhich Craig and Daniel had ordered as well. The hare was caught fresh, and made into a savory meatball, complemented with the sweet winter carrot puree. I never knew cute animals where so tasty! Colette decided to settle with something less fuzzy:

^ Warm salad of roasted parsnip and stilton
with toasted and pickled walnuts.

Grilled fallow deer chops with crispy garlic potatoes,
black cabbage and mushroom ketchup.

Then the main dish arrived, and a brave one for me at that. Deer is one of my favorite animals, and I had ordered the Grilled fallow deer. The chops came with a thin slab of fat rimming the bone, and the meat was soft, dark and savory without the heavy char taste. To level out the richness of the deer, on the side was a slightly vinegary dip and juicy mushrooms with a hint of tomatoes. Craig and Daniel ordered the same with Colette ordering this delicately crispy yet juicy dish:

Berkshire phesant kiev with marjoram butter,
 spiced red cabbage and champ

^ The wine with dinner was a 2008 Pinot Noir: Ten Minutes by Tractor
a wine imported from Australia.

^ Three British cheeses with oat biscuits, Welsh cakes and celery.
The cheddar was the highlight of the plate, not too creamy, sharp and crumbled in your mouth.

Moving on to desserts:

The Eton mess with caramelized apples, mincemeat and sherry jelly

Despite the overwhelming name, the dessert was deliciously contained. Every scoop got me to dig for the crunchy pieces of the caramelized apple. Craig then got this:

^ Warm spiced marmalade cakes with sour cream,
 fresh orange and whiskey jelly

Then at the end of dinner we where humbled by the appearance of the chef himself
after Daniel sent this note up to the kitchen:

^ "Sous Vide? Yes or No?
Why/how come everything is perfect?
Would you like to go to the dance with me?"

^ Chef Stephen Williams with Daniel

^ Craig and the whiskey,
downed so fast I never caught a taste or name!

^ How sugar cubes should be with your tea.

^ Way to end the night.

Delicious!

Ultimately, one of the best places for dinner with a pub-like setting. Great service, excellent food, fresh, refreshingly new and an amazing place for a true English country taste. I don't think I've ever had such amazing food and dinning experience.
